How it is calculated
How many leave days do you get in Korea?
Under the Labor Standards Act, a worker gets 1 paid leave day for each month of full attendance during the first year, up to 11 days. After one year with at least 80% attendance, the worker gets 15 days. One more day is added every two years from the third year, up to a maximum of 25 days. Foreign workers have exactly the same rights as Korean workers.
How unused leave pay (연차수당) is calculated
Unused leave is paid at your ordinary wage: unused days × leave hours per day × ordinary hourly wage. For a full-time worker the ordinary hourly wage is the monthly ordinary wage divided by 209 hours. Part-time workers who work 15 hours or more a week get leave in proportion to their hours: 8 hours × weekly hours ÷ 40 for each leave day.
When does the 15th day of leave appear?
The 15 days for the first year are granted on the day after you complete one year, so you must still be employed on your one-year anniversary date. A one-year contract that ends exactly on the last day of the first year earns only the 11 monthly days. The calculator applies this rule automatically.
Frequently asked questions
›Do I get paid for unused leave when I quit?
Yes. All unused annual leave must be paid as an allowance together with your final wages, within 14 days of leaving.
›Can my employer make my unused leave disappear?
Only if the employer formally urged you in writing to use it within the legal deadlines (연차 사용 촉진). Otherwise unused leave must be paid at the end of the leave year.
›Do part-time workers get annual leave?
Yes, if they work 15 hours or more a week at a workplace with 5 or more employees. The leave is proportional to their working hours.
›Is annual leave counted from the start date or the calendar year?
The law counts from your start date. Some companies use the calendar year (회계연도 기준) for convenience, but when you leave they must not give you less than the start-date method.
