How it is calculated

What is the F-2-7 visa?

F-2-7 is Korea's points-based long-term residence visa for skilled foreigners. It allows you to change jobs freely, lets your spouse work, and can lead to permanent residence (F-5) after three years. You need at least 80 points out of 170, plus the basic requirements for your applicant type.

How the points are counted

Four basic items give up to 130 points: age (up to 25), education (up to 25), Korean language (up to 20) and annual income (up to 60). Bonus items such as a Korean degree, volunteer work or KIIP completion add up to 40 points, and fines can deduct up to 70 points. Income usually decides the result: moving from ₩40 million to ₩50 million adds 5 points.

How to raise your score

The fastest gains are usually Korean language and KIIP completion, because they are within your control. Passing TOPIK 4 instead of 3 adds 5 points, and completing the KIIP adds 10 bonus points. Avoid any fines before applying, since a single immigration fine can cost 10 to 30 points.

Frequently asked questions

›How many points do I need for F-2-7?

At least 80 points out of 170, including bonus points and deductions, and you must meet the basic requirements for your applicant type.

›Which income counts?

Usually the previous year's earned income on the National Tax Service income certificate. Income from side jobs may not count, depending on your visa.

›Is the TOPIK or KIIP score better?

Both are scored the same way for the language item, but completing the KIIP also gives bonus points, so many applicants take both.

›Can I go from F-2-7 to permanent residence?

Yes. After three years on F-2-7 you can apply for F-5 if you meet the income and other requirements at that time.
