How it is calculated

What gets deducted from a Korean salary?

Korean employers withhold four social insurance contributions (often called the 4 major insurances, 4대보험) plus income tax every month. In 2026 the employee pays 4.75% for the National Pension, 3.595% for health insurance, 13.14% of the health premium for long-term care insurance and 0.9% for employment insurance. Income tax is progressive from 6% to 45%, and a local income tax of 10% of the income tax is added on top.

Rules that are different for foreigners

Not every foreign worker pays every insurance. The National Pension depends on a reciprocity agreement with your home country, so some nationalities are exempt or can claim a lump-sum refund when they leave Korea. Employment insurance is mandatory for residence-type visas such as F-2, F-5 and F-6 but optional for many work visas. Foreigners can also choose a flat 19% income tax rate instead of the progressive rates. Use the switches above to match your situation.

How this calculator finds your income tax

Employers withhold income tax every month using the National Tax Service simplified withholding table (근로소득 간이세액표), which sets the tax by monthly taxable pay and number of dependents. This calculator uses the same official table (revised 27 February 2026), including the monthly deduction for children aged 8–20, so the result matches a typical payslip. In January and February of the following year the exact tax is settled, and any difference is refunded or collected.

Frequently asked questions

How much is ₩50 million a year after tax in Korea?

With a ₩200,000 meal allowance and no dependents, a ₩50,000,000 salary is roughly ₩3.5 million per month after tax and insurance in 2026. Enter your own details above for an exact estimate.

Is the 19% flat tax better for foreigners?

Usually only for high earners. The flat rate applies to your whole taxable salary with no deductions, so for most salaries under about ₩150 million the normal progressive tax is lower. Try both options in the calculator to compare.

Can I get my National Pension back when I leave Korea?

Citizens of many countries can claim a lump-sum refund of their National Pension contributions when they leave Korea permanently. Eligibility depends on your nationality and visa type, so check with the National Pension Service before you leave.

Why is my payslip slightly different from this result?

Your payslip may include allowances, overtime or bonuses that change each month, and some employers withhold at 80% or 120% of the table instead of 100%. The calculator uses the 100% rate and a fixed monthly salary.
